Qianlong Ancient Well |
Qianlong Ancient Well was formerly known as Dacheng Well and was renamed after Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, who used to drink water from the well during his third inspection tour to the southern reaches of the Yangtze River. It was firstly built in 1525 AD, the 4th year of the reign of Emperor Jiajing of Ming Dynasty and then was dredged twice respectively in 1834 AD, the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Daoguan and in 1879 AD, the 1st year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty after being found clogging with silt. The dredge was funded by an ancestral temple of an influential family called Chen. Since then, the water of the well, being clean and clear, has become a constant source of drinking water for local people.
